Game of Thrones

Image
Valar Morghulis. All men must die... That's right it's the hit TV show Game of Thrones that has completely taken the world by storm with it's incredible story and characters. In the world of Westeros, four main houses compete for control of the realm. This series has blood, sex, humour and a story so deep and complex it will have you up till all hours of the night as you can't wait to find out what happens next. Based on the books by George R.R Martin this series, every scene, every moment in this show is somehow inextricably linked with a meaningful plot line. Some twists are so intricate you are left wondering how one man came up with all of this on his own. Game of Thrones is famous for its big moments, its 10/10 episodes that leaves audiences stunned speechless. But at its core this show is about politics, control and power with characters ranging from witty dwarfs to gallant heroes. Don't let this struggle for power distract you too much though, an ancient t...

Rick and Morty

Image
What happens when two comical geniuses create a show about an infinite number of universes? The answer is perhaps one of the most unique and comical shows ever created. From the first episode writers Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have solidified Rick and Morty as a crude, boundary pushing show with very few limitations. The plot of the series follows the strange and often highly dangerous adventures of Rick Sanchez (Justin Roiland) an alcoholic / genius scientist with the knowledge and ability to travel across and between different universes. However, Rick is not alone on his adventures. He is always accompanied by his highly uneducated grandson Morty Smith (Justin Roiland), Morty’s role on these adventures is to assist Rick and make up for Ricks apparent lack of morals. This difference often results in Morty and others getting insulted or horribly injured with both Morty’s legs being broken in the first episode and many aliens murdered. Along with the two main charact...

Parks and Recreation

Image
Hey hey guys, it's your sitcom queen back at it here again! Today I'll be covering one of my favourite shows ever. It's got obviously some amazing comedic timing and versatile characters. Parks and recreation! Once again, the show just like my last post is set in an office type setting, but in the Indiana Parks and Recreation Department. It follows Leslie Knope, A do-gooder who hopes to make her city a better place and move up in her career. She is quite the eccentric type lacking some social skills. The show portrays the obstacles she faces in order to good, her love interests and the office relationships. In the office there are many interesting characters who my descriptions will do no justice to. So I recommend watching the show to find out but here is a small video I found of one funny moment of one of my favourite characters, Andy Dwyer. As you see, the characters are pretty hilarious. Fun Fact: The actor who plays Andy Dwyer, Chris Pratt, went on to play lead...

Prison Break

Image
Image Source This has to be the most suggested TV Show so far and thanks to the assignment I finally got to watch it. I can describe it one word, "Genius". The whole story lies in the title itself. They're trying to break out of a prison. But it's not your same old Plan, Execute and Escape story. I'd prefer not to spoil the plot but it's how well the writers have written everything that make the show as amazing as it is. Every character, even the sidekick of an influential prisoner has a purpose, a reason for why they are there. Maybe it's the death of the sidekick that affects the story or maybe he did something, every character's action change the story and simultaneously keep it on track. None of the characters feel useless or purposeless and if you've ever watched a show that involves a lot of people/characters, a bad cast is all it takes to ruin the show. Luckily, Prison Break handles that quite well. Moving on the 'Genius' p...

Vikings

Image
Are you a fan of drama, history, and Scandinavian culture? If you answered yes to any of these or just enjoy watching people in armour fight to the death then Vikings is the show for you. The plot of this series follows the rise of Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel), a 9 th century Viking, from his humble beginnings as a Scandinavian farmer, to becoming the ruler of the Viking people.  Throughout the series Ragnar’s bloody and war filled journey takes him to many countries such as the Baltic Region, England and France. He is accompanied on this journey by several members of his family, his wives Lagerta (Katheryn Winnick) and Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland), his son Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) and his sibling Rollo(Clive Standen), along with a cast of other viking characters such as Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard), Helga (Maude Hirst) and Ivar (Alex Hogh Anderson). The show has run for a total of 5 years which has consisted of 4 seasons and 89 episodes. There also appe...

Breaking Bad (drama)

Image
What do you get when an overqualified high school chemistry teacher gets lung cancer? Well you get the biggest, baddest and greatest drug lord you've ever seen. I'm talking of course about Breaking Bad's Walter White. When Walt contracts lung cancer he seeks out his former high school student Jessie Pinkman, in order to manufacture and sell crystal meth. It turns out that Walt's chemistry skills allow him to produce the highest quality crystal meth on the market, which quickly spirals him and Jessie into the underworld of drug dealers, hit men and dodgy lawyers. What really drives this series is how each character develops, especially Walt and Jessie. Walt goes from a cautious high school chemistry teacher, struggling to provide for his family to a ruthless drug lord willing to put even his own family at risk in order to expand his empire. This series is a must watch for anybody. It's not the kind of drama that drags on for 12 seasons until the ratings drop so l...

The Office (US)

Image
Hey guys! It's Sushmi here again, with yet another sitcom, The Office (US version). This show is one that I've recently started watching and it's a really good show to pass time and procrastinate, with short 20-25 minute episodes that are extremely funny. As the title suggests the show revolves around an office, a branch of a paper company in Scranton, America called 'Dunder Mifflin'. It shows the everyday lives of the staff of this company under the management of their eccentric manager, Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell, a very talented actor who has starred in many successful movies, eg. Despicable Me Series, Get Smart. Even though the staff are working a boring everyday sales role, the interactions within each character is what makes the show so good. The main recurring roles include a love interest between receptionist, Pam, and sales, Jim Chapman. Along side with Jim works, Dwight Shrute, a hilarious character  with a lack of good social skills and co...

Sherlock

Image
11 mins and 40 secs is how far in to the first episode of the show the name Sherlock Holmes came up. Said by the protagonist himself, I'm surprised it took that took long. Before I go any further, I'll let you know that this is kind of a modernized 'Sherlock', slightly different from the ones you've read in the books. He prefers texting to calling, knows how to use the internet, has a website and talks in a way that I'd describe as 'cheesy', for the lack of a better word. Maybe it's the books that made the old Sherlock look like a serious person cause all you had your was your imagination but I haven't read more than 50 pages so I can't say. This modern 'cheesy'(I think I should stop using that word) Sherlock's got the wit though, it's like he has sensors all over his body and 4 eyes that he is able to observe so much in a person in one glance. Image Source 17 mins in and there have been a couple jokes ...

The Regular Show

Image
Created in 2009 by J.G. Quintel, the animated series The ‘Regular Show’ has spanned 8 years and 8 seasons with 245 episodes. The story of this series is based around the lives of two young groundskeepers Mordecai (J.G. Quintel) and Rigby (William Salyers) who work and live at their local park. This series differs from many other animated series of the same genre as many of the characters portrayed are not human, with ‘Mordecai’ being a blue jay and ‘Rigby’ being a raccoon, as well as many other secondary characters such as ‘Benson’ (Sam Marin) the gumball machine, ‘CJ’ (Linda Cardellini) a cloud in human form, ‘Pops’(Sam Marin) a man with a lollipop for a head and ‘Skips’ (Mark Hamill) a yeti that can only skip to get around. The differences amongst these characters appear to go entirely unnoticed with the characters interating as though nothing is out of the ordinary. Thus helping to teach young children that everyone is different but still just as important and equal. Whilst ...

True Detective (crime, thriller)

Image
Love heart stopping crime thrillers but hate the repetitiveness of shows like CSI and NCIS? Well look no further than short series of True Detective! This review will focus solely on season 1 (since season 2 is unfortunately disappointing compared to the first season). So what is this series all about? 17 years after working a case together, detectives Rust Cohle (played by Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (played by Woody Harrelson) are interviewed about the case they worked together involving the brutal serial killings of women in Louisiana in 1995. While working this case they also reopened a case about a girl who went missing years ago. As a result they decide that the two cases are inextricably linked.  As the mystery unfolds the tense relationship between Cohle and Hart reaches breaking point as the horrific crimes they uncover force them to question humanity. Cohle's particularly bleak view of the world offers moments of verisimilitude. Make no mistake, this isn...

Gossip Girl

Image
"Gossip Girl  here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite" Gossip Girl is an extremely popular America teen drama centered around the lives of some upper-class teenagers living in Manhattan's Upper East Side (UES).  The TV Show is based on a book series and had run for 5 seasons. The characters in the show are filthy filthy rich with servants, travelling in limos to school and unlimited credit cards. It makes an average teenage girl like me yearn for a life like this. The show predominantly revolves around 5 characters: Serena Van Der Woodsen, the "IT Girl", with good looks, energy and charisma; Blair Waldorf, also pretty, snobbish, schemer, best friend of Serena "Queen Bee; Dan Humphrey, does not live in UES- "peasant", "lonely boy", attractive, sensitive, write; Chuck Bass, play boy, hedonist, anti-hero ; AND Nate Archibald, "pretty boy", good guy. Now the show is called ...

Daredevil

Image
Image Source Daredevil. Hmm.. Where should I start? The plot I guess. Daredevil follows the story of Matt Murdock, a lawyer by day, vigilante crime fighter by night who has to fight The Russian Mob, Chinese Trafficking System, Japanese gang and Wilson Fisk a.k.a The Kingpin (Yeah, Matt's a busy man. I wonder when he gets the time to sleep). The show begins with an accident showing what caused Matt's blindness, which I feel is a great way to start since knowing the background of the protagonist before showing the present events helps you understand the character better and there are some flashbacks shown in between which help you get deeper into the story of the character. So yeah, a good start, check.  Coming back to the plot, rather than limiting him, the blindness gave Matt superhuman senses (There's the 'superhero' touch) which he uses to deliver justice, not only as a lawyer but also a vigilante, fighting crime in the shadows of Hell's Kitchen(I l...
