True Detective (crime, thriller)
Love heart stopping crime thrillers but hate the repetitiveness of shows like CSI and NCIS? Well look no further than short series of True Detective! This review will focus solely on season 1 (since season 2 is unfortunately disappointing compared to the first season).
So what is this series all about? 17 years after working a case together, detectives Rust Cohle (played by Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (played by Woody Harrelson) are interviewed about the case they worked together involving the brutal serial killings of women in Louisiana in 1995. While working this case they also reopened a case about a girl who went missing years ago. As a result they decide that the two cases are inextricably linked.
As the mystery unfolds the tense relationship between Cohle and Hart reaches breaking point as the horrific crimes they uncover force them to question humanity. Cohle's particularly bleak view of the world offers moments of verisimilitude.
Make no mistake, this isn't your typical crime drama where the killer always gets caught and the hero feels victorious. These two detectives are pushed to the brink of their humanity. What makes this series so unique however are the small details. For example in the interview Cohle drinks beer, which one would assume is because he'san alcoholic, but it's actually because anything he says from that point on is inadmissible in court.
So what are you waiting for? With only 8 episodes True Detective is rich with shocking truths in our world that will leave you craving for more!
